30 Days of Community

We kicked off the spring season with a new project called “30 Days of Community”, using a temporarily vacant storefront on Penn and Lowry to host community activities every day in April. Residents stepped up and lead everything from crocheting circles to game night, sidewalk concerts to open mics. We were grateful to use the space previously home to The Goddess of Glass and then in June 2014 Cleveland residents Chaun Webster and Verna Wong opened North Minneapolis’ first bookstore, Ancestry Books.

We kicked off on April 1st with a bit of fun for April Fools offering neighbors "100 Grand", the candy bar, not money.

One of the questions we asked residents as they stopped by our community space was what they would do with $500 to make a difference in their community. We heard a lot of great ideas and are still looking for more. Here’s just a few…

Laney Playground Build Day

We had the very exciting opportunity to partner with Lucy Laney School, Toro and the Vikings along with Kaboom! to do a playground build in just one day. Thanks to the 200+ volunteers from the neighborhood and partner organizations the students of Lucy Laney and youth in the community have had a brand new playground to enjoy close to their school.

Party In The Park

The Youth Committee of the Cleveland Neighborhood Association hosted their second annual series of Party in the Park events, a community dinner, games and resource sharing for north Minneapolis residents at Cleveland Park. Resident connected with their neighbors of a community dinner, participated in games, art, and activities and had a chance to learn about community resources from our sponsor organizations: Home Energy Squad, PICA Headstart, Kare Mobile, Mad Dads, People for Parks, and Hennepin County Teen and Child Check-up.

Pop-Ups & Our Summer Step-Up Crew

Our Pop-up Block Parties are a great way for residents to connect with each other and for CNA to connect with residents about the ways we can serve them and their community. All these summer events: Block Parties, Live on the Drive, Party in the Park and National Night Out, all of it is made possible thanks to the amazing help of our summer youth interns. Step-Up allows us to employ local high school students for the summer giving them job training, a summer income, and for us a significant increase in staff for our big events.

Annual Party 2014

Our final large event of the year is our Annual Party, a great opportunity to share the stories of the year with community residents, enjoy a meal together and hold elections for new board members. We’re excited to welcome on two new board members: Caroline Field and Peony Hildreth.
